Neo-Marxism: An Introduction and Its Application to Urdu Poetry and Literature

Neo-Marxism represents a modern reinterpretation and expansion of classical Marxist thought that emerged during the twentieth century in response to changing social, political, and cultural realities. Unlike classical Marxism, which primarily emphasized economic determinism and class conflict, Neo-Marxism broadens the scope of analysis by incorporating culture, ideology, media, language, psychology, and intellectual institutions into the study of society and literature. Thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Georg Lukács, Herbert Marcuse, and members of the Frankfurt School contributed significantly to the development of Neo-Marxist theory by exploring how dominant ideologies shape human consciousness and maintain systems of power and hegemony.
In Urdu poetry and literature, Neo-Marxist criticism offers a comprehensive framework for examining the relationship between literature and socio-political structures. Urdu literary tradition, particularly Progressive literature, has consistently reflected issues of exploitation, colonialism, feudal oppression, class disparity, political resistance, and the struggles of marginalized communities. Writers and poets such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Habib Jalib, Saadat Hasan Manto and Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi used literature as a means of challenging oppressive systems and articulating collective social consciousness. Through a Neo-Marxist lens, their works can be interpreted as ideological texts that expose the mechanisms of domination and advocate social transformation.
Moreover, contemporary Urdu literature increasingly engages with themes such as globalization, capitalism, urbanization, technological alienation, identity crises, and consumer culture, which further strengthen the relevance of Neo-Marxist criticism in modern literary studies. This theoretical approach not only deepens the understanding of literary representation and ideological discourse but also highlights the dynamic interaction between literature, culture, and power. Therefore, Neo-Marxism remains an influential and productive critical methodology for analyzing both classical and contemporary trends in Urdu poetry and prose.
