The Iran-Iraq Conflict and Its Lasting Impact on Middle East Stability and Geopolitical Dynamics from 1980s.
Abstract
The Iran-Iraq Conflict, spanning from 1980 to 1988, was a prolonged and devastating war that profoundly impacted the Middle East's stability and geopolitical dynamics. The conflict was driven by a complex mix of territorial disputes, religious differences, and political rivalries between Iran and Iraq. Iraq, led by President Saddam Hussein, sought to assert dominance in the Persian Gulf region and capitalize on Iran's post-revolutionary instability. The war resulted in significant human and economic costs, with an estimated 500,000 to 1 million deaths and massive financial losses exceeding $1 trillion
